Plaster, Clay and more

Clay, especially oil based clay like Plastelina, is my favorite material for sculpting. Unlike sand, it is both additive and subtractive. There is no water. It doesn't dry out, there are practically no limitations, and it can be cast into any other material like plaster, metal or synthetics like epoxy resins, etc. The Boy with Book (left) was made with self hardening (air dry) clay on an aluminum armature as a demonstration piece for a junior high school class.

These portraits depict some of my personal heroes including: Gandhi, Hellen Keller, Mark Twain, Nelson Mandella, Abe Lincoln, Mother Theresa... They adorn the entrance of my old (1892) apartment building. The sculptures cover detertiorating limestone capitals which flank the doors and windows of the entrance. Unknown to casual passersby, they are made of Plastelina, painted to look like stone. Vulnerable to changes in temperature, they occasionally need to be replaced or repaired after repeated freezing and baking in New York's severe weather.
